Welcome to the African Centre of Chemical Ecology
University of Pretoria, South Africa

About ACCE

The discipline of chemical ecology is well developed in the global south; however, there is still considerable potential to increase capacity and impact of the discipline in the southern hemisphere. Although the African Centre for Chemical Ecology will promote and welcome collaboration with researchers from around the globe, its primary focus will be Africa and the southern hemisphere.

Vision

The ACCE aims to:

i) facilitate the development and maintenance of interdisciplinary and international research networks,

ii) foster impactful research and the translation of research outputs to stakeholders,

iii) facilitate access to and incorporation of the increasing number of technologies into chemical ecology research projects.

Prof Jeremy D. Allison, Director of the ACCE

“Chemical ecology is the study of the role of chemicals mediating intra- and interspecific interactions and draws on expertise from the fields of ecology, chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, behavior, evolution and phylogenetics. Olfaction is the dominant modality the biotic world uses to obtain information about the environment and consequently chemical ecology has incredible potential to inform our understanding of the natural world. In addition, knowledge of the chemicals involved in these interactions can facilitate the development of biorational integrated pest management programs. By its very nature, the discipline of chemical ecology is interdisciplinary and requires collaboration.  All available empirical evidence suggests that by both quantitative and qualitative metrics, research outputs are positively impacted by collaboration."
